Women in the early 1960s either grew out their fifties bouffant into a beehive style or cut it into a shoulder- or ear-length bob that they flipped out at the ends. Bangs were optional but blunt (and a great way to mask a large forehead). Many stars today emulate styles popularized in the 1960s. Vidal Sassoon created a short, blunt bob similar to what the stars are wearing now, and stars like Mia Farrow and Twiggy wore even shorter, blunt cuts—similar to Halle Berry and Anne Hathaway’s short locks.

Though most of this era’s bouffant styles will make you look like Peg Bundy, stars like Michelle Williams and Zooey Deschanel take inspiration from this era by wearing natural waves with some structure. This can be a great look for women who have some natural wave to their hair, or those who can fake it by using loose rollers. Be careful when styling this, because if your hair looks stiff or super-styled, it won’t have the same natural, effortless effect.

The makeup of the sixties is surprisingly straightforward. At the beginning, makeup was very dramatic—to match the huge hair—but later on, the looks were more natural.

If you want to achieve a sixties look with your makeup, decide if you’re going early (mod, beehive) or late (hippie, looser). To mimic the early sixties, it’s best to go light on your lips and dark with your eyes, and amp up the drama. However, if you’re going for a later sixties style, go light on the makeup or don’t wear any at all.
